Whether you’re a ghost hunter, a conspiracy theorist or a UFO enthusiast, even if you’re not any of those, you still have to admit there are a lot of strange events in this world that can be hard, if not impossible to explain. Need an example? You’re in luck because we’ve found eight of them.
The bizarre photographs in this article have remained unexplained for over half a century in some cases, and it remains uncertain if we’ll ever learn the truth about their origins. But the question is, which stories leave you scratching your head and which have a perfectly simple explanation? That’s for you to decide.
1. Babushka Lady
The ‘Babushka Lady’ is the nickname of the woman who was present during the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy who has never been identified.
The woman appeared in numerous films that captured the final moments of Kennedy’s life. She was seen standing, holding a camera to her face even though most of the surrounding witnesses had taken cover. The woman never came forward and despite an extensive investigation by the FBI, her identity remains a mystery to this day.
2. The Hessdalen Lights
A favourite of UFO enthusiasts, the Hessdalen lights are a strange phenomenon that only occurs in the Hessdalen valley in Norway. Sightings of the unexplained lights have been reported since the 1940’s, and thousands of curious photographers have travelled to the valley to capture them on film, but as yet nobody knows why they occur.
Within UFO circles many believe the source of this bizarre phenomenon to be alien in origin, while those with their minds closer to planet earth theorize that the Hessdalen lights are more likely to be caused by a battery effect produced by metallic rocks and a sulfurous river.
3. Hook Island Sea Monster
Long before Photoshop existed, the Le Serrec family took this photograph of the Hook Island Monster in 1964. Its sighting has since earned a reputation for being one of the most mysterious cryptozoology cases ever to be caught on camera.
It was Le Serrec’s wife who initially spotted the gigantic 80ft long tadpole-like creature in the lagoon at Stonehaven Bay, Hook Island, Queensland. The couple watched it slowly float towards them until, suspecting it was dead, the sea serpent suddenly opened its toothless mouth and swam away. Nothing like it has ever been spotted again.
4. Solway Firth Space Man
In 1964, Jim Templeton, a firefighter from Carlisle, England, took three photographs of his five-year-old daughter while on a day trip to Burgh Marsh. In a letter to the Daily Mail in 2002, Templeton stated, “I took three pictures of my daughter Elizabeth in a similar pose – and was shocked when the middle picture came back from Kodak displaying what looks like a spaceman in the background.”
Templeton insists that he did not see the figure until after his photographs were developed, and analysts at Kodak confirmed that the photograph was genuine.
5. The Cooper Family Photo
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve probably seen this chilling photograph a few (thousand) times. While its origin remains unclear the story that gets passed around with it is that sometime in the 1950’s, a family named the Coopers were enjoying a meal after moving into their new house in Texas. As the photo was taken, a body fell from the ceiling. The horrifying moment captured in a single shot.
While many believe the hanging corpse is a result of double exposure on the film, others believe that there is something far more sinister going. From ghosts to devil worship, it seems the list of creepy theories are as numerous as the copies of the photograph itself.
6. The Geophone Rock
This photograph, taken by near Geophone Rock, during the last flight to the moon, was listed as a ‘blank’ in the Apollo 17 photographic index. However when the saturation and contrast of the image are altered, the photograph appears to reveal pyramid-like structures.
Even though the photograph suffers from extreme light exposure and noise issues, it has led some to speculate that there is a lot more on the moon that has been hidden from the general public.
7. Freddy Jackson
Freddy Jackson, a mechanic for the Royal Air Force was tragically killed in a freak-accident by an aeroplane propeller two days before this group picture was taken. However Jackson did not let his death get in the way of him showing up on time for the group shot.
Several of the other men in the photograph have come forward to confirm that it is in fact Jackson’s face in the background of the picture.
8. The Time Traveller
Taken in 1941 at the re-opening of the South Forks Bridge in Gold Bridge, Canada, this photograph clearly shows a man out of time. Dressed in modern clothes and style, the man holds a camera that is advanced well beyond its time. The circle on the left illustrates a man with a camera typical to the time-period.
Is this proof of temporal anomalies? For some, this strange photograph has led them to believe that time travel has already occurred, and that visitors from the future have travelled to our past.
